MLA encyclopedia citation

According to the eighth edition of Modern Language Association handbook, the MLA guideline has recommended to omit the inclusion of Web site addresses from Works Cited entries for online sources, neither for online books, dictionaries or encyclopedias, because the links tend to change so quickly. If the instructor required to include one anyway like for Web page or digital file to add clarity, enclose it in angle brackets and put it at the end of the entry on your Works Cited page.

There are appears two ways of citing the encyclopedias. The first approach is a in text citation the encyclopedia entry’s title goes in parentheses for an in-text citation if there isn’t an author. Otherwise, the author’s name is included instead.

The other approach be expressed within citation generator. To cite the encyclopedia with MLA citation generator apply followed information:

  •  If the entry is signed, start your citation with the author’s name,
  •  the title of the entry, if the entry is one among many, you should specify which entry you are referring to,
  • give the name of the encyclopedia (the name of the Web site in case of online sources), followed by (if applicable) the edition,
  • the latest copyright date,
  • in case of Web usage type the date you accessed the entry.

Many online encyclopedias, however, will not have an edition number because they are being continuously updated. The date of access is important since Web sources may change and be revised by the time your reader accesses it, so conclude the entry with the access date in day-month-year format, ending with a period.

The outstanding features of citing the encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference works, the publisher information do not included. Also, if the reference book is organized alphabetically, as most are, the volume or the page number of the article or item do not listed.
